Exiled in 1976 from her homeland in South Africa, Sonti lived as a refugee in Botswana and later on, in Germany, where she appeared on television with Donna Summer and Tina Turner. Sonti also appeared on stage in the musicals IPI TOMBI and SOUNDS of SOWETO. Sonti's inspirational effort to spread the message of hope against apartheid was particularly effective through songs. She sang songs of hope and freedom including taking part in the famous Graceland tour by Paul Simon. In this same vein, she made special appearances with, Sting, Steve Wonder, Elton John, Hugh Masekela, Mariam Makeba, Lionel Richie , Peter Gabriel and Sade to mention but a few. |

"By 1976, I had to go into exile in
Botswana because I was involved in the Soweto uprising. That was a very
painful time. My parents would come with my child to visit me at the
weekends. Luckily I met good people there and soon established a career. In
1979, whilst performing at a festival, the leader of Jabula, a London-based
South African group, complemented me on my voice so I begged him to bring me
to London. Instead he recommended me to another musical group based in
Hamburg. So in 1980 I moved to Germany. Within two years I came to London
where I was invited to join IpiTombi for a tour of West Africa.
